ABOUT ME – MY STORY
Early in my 25-year career as a travel professional, a client who was also a medical doctor gave me some very sound advice: ‘Either change the way you’re doing things, or change professions. You can’t live with this amount of stress!’
He was right. I was exhausted and overwhelmed, and I was getting sick far too often. Remembering that my father had passed away due to a stress-related illness at age 62, I made a commitment to eliminate stress. I studied a plethora of holistic modalities (instead of everything under the sun) from meditation, Reiki and aromatherapy to Watsu, Hatha Yoga and Ai Chi. I also took up scuba diving and went on lots of retreats. Soon I was happy to discover that I was nearly stress-free!
I was so excited I decided to share my knowledge with the world. But my elation was destroyed during my first radio interview, when I discovered that my hands were wet with sweat and my heart was beating so hard I feared it could be heard over the radio. I came out of that interview totally shattered. Who was I to think I could help anyone else when l myself was a complete wreck?
In one short afternoon, my dream had become my nightmare. Fraught with fear, insecurity, frustration and shattered self–esteem, I abandoned my lofty project to help others with stress. I was convinced I was a loser, and I started to resent my life.
Giving up isn’t what I do; yet I did. Everything became a struggle and since I wasn’t one to ask for help, I felt alone, disheartened, exhausted and completely disconnected from everyone and everything. I became paralysed by fear and was too scared to try anything new for fear of failing again. I was stuck in a rut.
Lo and behold not much later I was diagnosed with breast cancer. What a blow! My mother had lost her battle to breast cancer some years previously and now I had my own battle to fight. Yet this was my turning point.
Understanding stress was one thing, however I realised that I had fundamentally missed something important. Being the daughter of a scientist and with my training in journalism I devoured books, listened to talks and summits from experts about their ground-breaking discoveries to help me on my journey. This is when I decided to change my life completely and study Wellness Coaching.
I made it my personal quest to detox my life, change my diet and shift gears and fall in love with life! With my newfound knowledge and a shifted mindset I now see how reaching out for support as a sign of great strength and has been instrumental for me so that I can continue to grow and evolve. I have come to realise that heart centred awareness is essentially the secret to successful living.
Now I wake up every morning feeling blessed to be alive and able to experience and witness all the joy that life has to offer. Love has returned to my life and to my cells. Wellness is now an integral part of my everyday life and self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessary requirement for me to thrive, not just survive.
